Pourtant, tournant le dos à l’existence confortable et sans surprise qui l’attend, le jeune homme décide de prendre la route en laissant tout derrière champs de blé du Dakota aux flots tumultueux du Colorado, en passant par les communautés hippies de Californie, Christopher va rencontrer des personnages hauts en couleur. Chacun, à sa manière, va façonner sa vision de la vie et des bout de son voyage, Christopher atteindra son but ultime en s’aventurant seul dans les étendues sauvages de l’Alaska pour vivre en totale communion avec la Californie, il rencontre un couple de hippies sur le retour. Dans le Dakota il travaille dans une ferme jusqu’à ce que le gérant Vince Vaughn ne se fasse arrêter pour malversations. Il descend le long du Colorado pour arriver au Mexique. De retour aux États-Unis, il retrouve le couple de hippies puis tombe sous le charme de Tracy Kristen Stewart qu’il rejette cependant du fait de son jeune âge. McCandless va ensuite faire la rencontre de Franz Hal Holbrook, un jeune retraité avec qui il sympathise. Au point que Franz lui propose de l’adopter. Ce à quoi McCandless répond qu’ils régleront ça à son retour d’Alaska, brisant au passage le cœur du vieil fois en Alaska, il trouve refuge dans un bus abandonné. C’est une fois seul et éloigné de tout qu’il réalise que la vie est en fait plus intéressante quand on la partage…..
